Master Degree

Master of Science in Astronomy

Students may complete their Master Degree in two years (four semesters). The CMU Graduate Collage requests all students who English are not his/her first language to pass the English exam.

Coursework

A total of 8 courses (23 credits) are required for the degree. Of that number, three core courses (8 units) are required: History of Astronomy and Its frontier (ASTR701), Stellar Astrophysics I (ASTR705), and Computational Astronomy (ASTR710).

In addition to the core courses, student must choose at least five elective courses (15 credits) offer in Astronomy programs. Substitution courses from Physics or related program can be made by petition to the Astronomy Program Committee.

Students must also attend and present their works in Graduate Seminar during their second year this is as part of course ASTR791 and ASTR792.

All of that above class, students must achieve a grade point average of at least 2.00 for each courses and averaged over all of at least 3.00.

Thesis

Every student requires the completion of a thesis with equivalent credits of twelve. The thesis must have been proved of its originality. Final oral examination (defense of thesis) is required for all students in the program. The examination committee is including his/her thesis advisor(s) and at least one external examiner. At least one publication as part of the thesis work must be published or accepted in an international journal indexed in ISI or Scopus or Web of Science database or as a full paper in an international conference’s proceeding, which is accepted by the program, with the student as the first author.
